Sea Turtles

My travel plans have been greatly curtailed this summer due to the fact that Monkey Boy is in the summer production of Peter Pan. Original summer travel plans:
  • One or two weeks at Michigan house
  • Few days in Tampa at Busch Gardens
  • Visit Mom and Dad PeachPod in Mississippi
  • Go to Charlotte for a week
  • Go to Atlanta a couple of weekends
Travel plans now:
  • Go to either Atlanta or Tampa for a weekend
  • Visit Mom and Dad PeachPod in Mississippi
So plan B is some 'mini' vacations in the area. A couple of weekends ago the new Georgia Sea Turtle Center had a preview opening and Monkey Boy I went over and checked it out. Our coast is one of the nesting grounds for sea turtles. Sometimes the turtles get injured by boat props and this center nurses them back to health so that they can be released again. This place is great! I'm not going to try to convince you that this is comparable to the Smithsonian, but for a small town in South Georgia, they've done a really good job. They have a small interactive learning center that does a good job presenting information about turtles and their environment. Behind the learning center is the turtle hospital which is a barn with a lot of large tanks. Monkey Boy both really enjoyed this outing. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour do this museum, depending on your level of ADD.
